January Altered Mailing Box

I mentioned in my 2014 Crafty Goals post, that I was planning on decorating and sending some sort of gift to my grands once a month.  Well, today I'm going to show you the decorated box for January.

I have a theme picked for each month, and the January theme was "Winter".  (I chose this BEFORE knowing how
C-O-L-D January would get!)  Because my grands are in Florida, where it should be warmer, and because it is right after Christmas, I was thinking the "winter" box would be on the smaller side.  I chose to decorate a small flat-rate box from USPS (for those interested - I've included dimensions for the paper panels below).

I used the gorgeous "Catching Snowflakes" stamp from A Time for Tea Designs.  The stamp design includes three snowflakes but fussy cutting them wasn't quite in my skill/patience level, so I used some metal snowflakes in place of them.   The sentiment was from the Silhouette store - and I added  some glitter glue to the words cut from the slate blue cardstock.  I don't list it below, but I used a Martha Stewart snowflake punch to cut a bunch of snowflakes from the scrap blue and white cardstock as confetti for the inside of the box.

I chose to cut the paper inside the box into panels rather than cover the whole inside.  This will allow a bit of flexibility to the box as it ships and should keep the papers from peeling away from the sides and/or getting crumpled in transport.

The panel dimensions are:
  • Box top - 8 1/2" x 5 1/4
  • Bottom - 8 3/8" x 5 1/4"
  • Long sides (2 pieces) - 8 3/8" x 1 1/2"
  • Short sides (2 pieces) - 5 1/4" x 1 1/2"
